Love Not Landfill working with Ealing Broadway

Did you know that 11 million items of clothing go to landfill in the UK every week? Ealing Broadway are helping to tackle this issue by providing two recycle banks for clothes to prevent items going to the landfill. Since September 2018, Ealing Broadway have collected over 31,000kgs of recycled clothing which makes them the best performing bank on the Love Not Landfill portfolio.

In the UK, 38 million items of new clothing are bought every week and 11 million go to landfill* – that needs to change and that change starts with us.

No longer need that green jumper? Suddenly have less wardrobe space? We are here to help! We’ve placed textile banks in Ealing Broadway that you can take any unwanted clothes to. We’ll collect them, sort through them and ensure that their next stage in life is not landfill!

Meet your Manager

Hi, I’m Andrew Rollings, Centre Director at Ealing Broadway.

For the past five years I have had the pleasure of managing Ealing Broadway. During my time here, I have witnessed Ealing Broadway evolve into the bustling destination it has become today. Beloved by shoppers and diners, Instagrammers and families, the Centre is a showcase for British Land’s intelligent place making. It’s a place people prefer, no matter what they enjoy doing – a place with customers and community at heart. In 2015 I have carefully guided Ealing Broadway through its £14M refurbishment – putting so much time and dedication into the Centre that it began to feel like home, rather than my place of work! I am incredibly devoted to Ealing Broadway; so much in fact that I became the Chair of Make It Ealing, formally known as Ealing Broadway BID.

One of the greatest pleasures about managing Ealing Broadway is the onsite team I work alongside, all of whom share my passion for integrating the centre into the local community.

I enjoy eating Welsh cakes in my spare time, and watching the rugby with a cold pint of Guinness. Spending time outdoors is also important to me – I am an avid gardener. White wine, traffic lights and shoes with no laces, are among the few things I dislike.

We love local

The Ealing Broadway team are passionate and dedicated to ensuring customer service standards are at the highest possible level.

From the security teams to the Centre Management, we work hard to make sure our customers’ opinions are listened to and contribute to the running of things in all areas of the Centre.

It’s our goal to connect with each visitor, exceeding expectations by offering a wide selection of stores and an emotionally engaging marketing strategy that creates an exciting and memorable experience.

Young Readers

Primary school children from Woodlands Academy, West Acton Primary School and St John’s Primary School have attended a special storytelling session put on for them at Ealing Broadway which aims to help young people enjoy and fall in love with reading.

Organised as part of the Young Readers Programme, the National Literacy Trust has designed events to inspire children under the age of 11 to read in their spare time, and to see reading as a fun and creative activity. This program stems from a study that showed that reading outside of the classroom instigates higher reading levels within the class room. The event allowed the children who attend schools in Hanwell, Acton and West Ealing to hear stories from professional storyteller Alim Kamara.

Andrew Rollings, centre director at Ealing Broadway, said: “Supporting local children and their families is so important to us and the Young Readers Programme is an integral part of this. We look forward to this brilliant initiative every year and have loved hosting children from West Acton Primary School, Woodlands Academy and St John’s Primary School at Ealing Broadway.”

During the event, children took part in a range of activities which also included a quiz at Ealing Central Library and were able to take home a book of their choice.

Since getting involved in the programme in 2011, Ealing Broadway has supported more than 2,300 school children and more than 6,950 books have been donated.

Jonathan Douglas CBE, chief executive of the National Literacy Trust, said: “Reading for enjoyment is proven to support mental wellbeing, literacy skills, and future success. Encouraging children to enjoy reading from a young age can have a measurable impact on the rest of their lives. But the sad reality is that 6% of children across the country don’t have their own book to read at home, and many don’t find reading enjoyable. Through the Young Readers Programme and the support of British Land, we are able to help so many more children have fun whilst reading outside the classroom, give them access to inspiring books and access to many benefits that they may otherwise be missing out on.”

Our service pledge

One of our main priorities is to ensure our centre is as accessible as possible to all members of the public. We want all our customers to feel comfortable and at home here. Because of this, recent improvements have taken place to cater to the needs of our visitors and we now boast an increase in accessibility services such as baby changing and the introduction of the Changing Places facilities.

Furthermore, over 90% of our staff have received Dementia Friendly training, and are confident when putting it into practice, assisting our special needs customers in a caring, helpful and efficient manner.

Recent staff initiatives have also been introduced to increase the wellbeing of our employees in their workplace. This includes free fresh fruit and improvements to the staff room such as making the most of natural light. Social activities have also been organised; promoting team work, encouragement and importantly, friendship within the centre’s staff.

We are green

Ealing Broadway is proud to continue to be a zero landfill waste Centre.

We are consistently exploring new ways of becoming even more environmentally friendly, and because of this, our general waste is sent to the MRF treatment plant to be recovered as electricity. It is solutions like these that allow Ealing Broadway to stay 100% landfill free. During 2017/18, the Centre changed over 3,000 of its light bulbs to LED lighting, which is a process that is scheduled to proceed throughout 2019/20. The updated LED bulbs enable Ealing Broadway to further achieve reduced energy consumption levels. 2019 is charged with ambition to further increase development within the recycling sector.

Ealing Broadway is now more environmentally friendly than ever before.

Ealing has heart

Here at Ealing Broadway we work with local charities Ealing Mencap, The Soup Kitchen, The Log Cabin and the Rainbow Trust.

Throughout the year, several awareness and money raising events take place in the centre. This is a great opportunity for our customers -and our staff to get involved in the community’s charitable foundations.

We also work closely with universities, the centre having recently appointed a student ambassador from the University of West London. We felt it was important that the centre had a direct point of communication with its student population, beginning an efficient and friendly two-way conversation.

As well as this, Ealing Broadway will soon take part in the SMILE scheme, which will be held in the centre on behalf of the local children’s charity The Log Cabin. The aim of this project is to teach children with learning difficulties important life skills, such as shopping, and to teach them how to interact with the public in social spaces. Being at the centre of the local community, we are delighted to be able to host this event – an opportunity to become more accessible to our neighbourhood.
